The co-construction of the University of Strasbourg's Sustainable Development and Social and Environmental Responsibility Road Map

The Sustainable Development and Social and Environmental Responsibility Road Map (Schéma directeur développement durable et responsabilité sociétale et environnementale – SD DD&RSE) was developed with the active involvement of the entire university community, through collaborative workshops, dedicated meetings and direct discussions. The collective process was carried out in three main stages:

  • Taking stock of all existing actions and initiatives across different sectors to better coordinate them where necessary
  • Reflecting together on the university’s future, both in the medium and long term, with the involvement of the entire university community
  • Turning the strategy into concrete action by implementing tools to manage, monitor, evaluate and learn from its outcomes

The priorities of the University of Strasbourg’s sustainable development and social and environmental responsibility policy

  • Strategy and governance: placing socio-ecological transformation the heart of the university's strategy
  • Teaching and training: equipping the university community and members of the local community with the knowledge and skills to drive socio-ecological transformation
  • Research and innovation: enhancing the environmental responsibility of research and innovation
  • Reducing environmental impact: committing to operating efficiently, ecologically and sustainably
  • Social policy and quality of life: promoting inclusion, active participation and wellbeing across the university community

These five focus areas are broken down into 29 strategic objectives and 61 projects. For each project, a project sheet provides details on how it will be implemented.

Steering of the University of Strasbourg’s sustainable development and social and environmental responsibility policy

The sustainable development and social and environmental responsibility policy has been adopted for the period 2025–2029. Its implementation is overseen every year by:

  • A steering committee, responsible for monitoring the road map's implementation, ensuring coherence between projects and other university initiatives and addressing any organisational or financial obstacles
  • An operational technical committee, responsible for monitoring progress via the road map project tracking dashboard and its key indicators, identifying challenges and escalating issues to the steering committee when decisions are needed
