Sexual health and wellbeing

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), formerly known as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), are infections caused by viruses or bacteria. They are transmitted through sexual contact, with or without penetration.

Most STIs can be easily treated and do not lead to complications when diagnosed and treated early.

Condoms are the only contraceptive method that protects against STIs.

Some male condoms are available free of charge in pharmacies for people under 26. Free self-service male and female condoms are also available at the Student Health Office (rue de Palerme) and in sexual health supply dispensers across campus.

The Student Health Office provides information about and vaccination against hepatitis B and human papillomavirus (HPV), with on-site vaccination available.

After unprotected sex, you can get free screening for hepatitis A, B and C, HIV, syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhoea.

You can book an appointment online via Doctolib: select "Infirmier" or "Médecin généraliste", choose the consultation location, then select "Dépistage des infections sexuellement transmissibles".

How does STI screening work?

During a consultation, either by phone or in person (you can remain anonymous), a member of the screening team – a doctor or nurse – will provide information about sexually transmitted infections, discuss prevention and assess your level of exposure.

At the end of the consultation, you will receive a prescription for tests at a medical laboratory.

The tests can be done at a laboratory of your choice.

Results are usually available within one to three days.

If your results are positive, the Student Health Office will contact you directly. You will then receive a prescription for treatment along with guidance on the next steps.

To get information on STIs, make an appointment with a health professional from the Student Health Office.

You can also get tested at a Free information, screening and diagnostic centre (Centre gratuit d'information, de dépistage et de diagnostic – CEGIDD). Strasbourg's CEGIDD welcomes everyone, with or without an appointment, including minors, foreign nationals (who can ask for an interpreter) and people who are not affiliated with the French health insurance system. All services are free of charge.
